Texas Safety Record Questioned

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis recently commented on Texas’ need to focus on construction worker injuries and fatalities. Solis cited a report titled Construction Emergency. She pointed to the following problems in the state:

  • One-in-five construction workers is injured on the job.

  • Only 45 percent of workers have workers’ compensation.

  • In Texas, a construction worker dies every 2.5 days and nearly 16,900 accidents occur annually in that industry.

  • Injured construction workers contribute to a significant amount of uncompensated healthcare costs as a result of work-related injuries. Some hospitals report that care for construction workers accounts for 20 percent of their uncompensated costs.
