President Obama pledged his support for legislation that would prohibit job listings that discriminate against the unemployed, according to Change.org. Many employers believe employed candidates have up-to-date skills and have proven their staying power. However, Change.org has called on job sites to prohibit the practice because so many workers are out of work because of a poor economy rather than a deficiency in their skills.

The President said that discrimination against the unemployed “makes absolutely no sense. … You've seen so many folks who, through no fault of their own, ended up being laid off because of the difficulty of this recession," the President added.

Because joblessness is not a protected class, it isn’t illegal to eliminate unemployed candidates during searches, according to a New York Times article. However, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has held meetings examining the legality of the practice.
