Fighting FMLA Fraud: Managing Legitimate Absences While Minimizing Abuse

According to some estimates, more than 60 percent of employers believe they've granted Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) time off that was unfounded. June is a critical month for the FMLA, since the Department of Labor has promised to finally issue long-awaited and critical changes to its FMLA regulations. Employers have good reason to be cautious: According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, employees who successfully sue for wrongful termination based on an FMLA absence receive an average of $87,500 to $450,000 in damages.

He oversees ComPsych's absence management operations, helping large corporations such as GE manage FMLA and other employee absences. Prior to ComPsych, he has held positions in operations and staff development for a large health care organization as well as an insurance provider. Brown earned his juris doctorate as well as his master's degree in business administration from The University of Iowa.
