Wellness Programs – What’s Legal and What’s Not?

Wellness programs have the power to change employee behavior, prevent chronic illness and ultimately reduce health costs. But to be effective, a wellness plan must have incentives to ensure employees participate.
Employers must be more careful than ever in choosing incentives due to new regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA.
Join us for a 90-minute audio conference as Bob Carpenter and Susan Nash give an overview of changes in the HIPAA law and how to structure wellness incentives that are both legal and have the greatest impact upon changing employee behavior.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how HIPAA's nondiscrimination rules affect the incentives of wellness plans
- Describe the “20 percent” rule, and how it affects the use of health premium discounts as a wellness incentive
- Avoid the pitfalls of smoking-cessation incentives
- Compare the “carrot” and “stick” strategies, recognize if they work and how to choose incentives that produce the best results
