Gerard “Jerry” F. Scannell, Senior Editor, Compliance Magazine (former President of National Safety Council, Assistant Secretary of OSHA, and VP of Worldwide Safety for Johnson & Johnson)

Jerry Scannell is senior editor of Compliance Magazine . Scannell was nominated by President George H. Bush in 1989 to serve as Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA. During his leadership of OSHA from 1989 to 1992, Scannell lead the adoption of a new Standard for Process Safety for Highly Hazardous Chemicals and a Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. From 1992 to 1994, he served as VP of Worldwide Safety affairs for Johnson & Johnson, and in 1995, Scannell was named President and CEO of the National Safety Council. He was inducted into the Safety & Health Hall of Fame International in 1994.

E. Scott Geller, Ph.D.

E. Scott Geller, Ph.D., has authored more than 350 papers and 75 books or chapters addressing the development and evaluation of behavior-change interventions. Dr. Geller is a Senior Partner at Safety Performance Solutions and an Alumni Distinguished Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). His recent books include People-Based Safety, The Participation Factor, The Psychology of Safety, Working Safe, Understanding Behavior-Based Safety, Building Successful Safety Teams, The Psychology of Safety Handbook, and the primer, What Can Behavior Safety Do for Me? His next book, “The Anatomy of Medical Error,” coauthored by Dave Johnson, will be available this summer.

Dr. Geller is Associate Editor of “Environment and Behavior”, and consulting editor for “Behavior and Social Issues”, the “Behavior Analyst Digest” and the “Journal of Organizational Behavior Management.” His clients have included Allied Signal, American Standard, ARCO Chemical, AT&T, Bayer, Bechtel, BF Goodrich, BHP Copper, Cargill, Coca-Cola, Ford, and GM.

Former Acting Assistant Secretary for OSHA

Tyson joined the law firm of Constangy, Brooks & Smith as a partner in May 1986, after a 13-year career in the U.S. Department of Labor. He began his career in the Department’s Solicitor’s Office, where he served as an attorney representing OSHA. He later worked for OSHA, where he held the positions of Director of Compliance and Deputy Assistant Secretary. He concluded his work for OSHA in 1986 after serving two terms as the Acting Assistant Secretary for the Agency.

Since joining the firm, Tyson has continued his extensive involvement in the field of safety and health. In addition to representing clients on a wide range of safety and health issues, he is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council and was formerly Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Safety Council’s Foundation for Safety and Health. He also serves as Counsel to the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association’s Committee on Occupational Safety and Health Law.
