John Spath, CSP
Author, Building A Better Safety and Health Committee Manager of OHS,
Clayton Group Services

Currently employed as the Manager of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) for Clayton Group Services, Boston Regional Office, John has over 30 years of OHS experience with over 14 years of OHS consulting experience. His expertise includes management of division level Safety, Health & Environmental Departments for Fortune 500 companies such as Martin Marietta Aluminum, Lockheed Sanders, Atlantic Richfield Companies (ARCO), Pullman Standard and General Cinema.

John has developed and taught many health and safety related courses, including Safety Committee Leadership Skills; Developing Effective Safety and Health Programs; Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Awareness; Lockout / Tagout; Confined Space Entry; Powered Industrial Truck Operators; Laser Operator; Ergonomics and other OSHA-mandated training. He is an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer and have presented the OSHA 501 course (Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry) for the Keene State OSHA Training Institute in New Hampshire, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Author of Building A Better Safety & Health Committee (© ASSE 1998) Mr. Spath is a nationally recognized author and frequent lecturer. In 2001 he was named the Regional Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) by ASSE. John also received awards from the ASSE Foundation and the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in a 2002 National Competition for developing a study of Machine Guarding Concepts. Currently Mr. Spath serves as a safety studies program academic advisor to Keene State College in Keene, NH and to Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.

Hugh Byrd, Sr.
Safety Specialist/Power Plant Operator,
Northrop Gruman Newport News

Hugh has served as a Department Safety Specialist from 1990 to present. Mr. Byrd was a appointed and served as a leader in the Environment Health and Safety Task Team for 14 years. He was the first recipient of the National VPPPA Health & Safety Achievement Award. Mr. Byrd has also received the Newport News Shipbuilding Presidents Model of Excellence Award. Mr. Byrd has written many programs and procedures, including Back Injury Prevention and reduction in associated cumulative trauma disorders, Risk Analysis for Maintenance, and Mastering Opportunities for Improvement When Working in Confined Spaces.

Mr. Byrd has Developed and implemented advanced Safety training classes, and continuing a tutoring program for advanced candidates seeking to obtain the VPPPA National Health and Safety Achievement Award. Hugh continues to serve on the National VPPPA Health & Safety Achievement Award Committee in Washington, DC.

Stefanie M. Corbitt
OSHA Regulatory Specialist,
Keller and Heckman LLP

Stefanie Corbitt, Keller and Heckman's OSHA Regulatory Specialist, has extensive compliance and regulatory experience in the health, safety and environmental fields. As the original environmental, safety and health manager for the Texas location of the world's leading supplier of beverage dispensing equipment, Ms. Corbitt was responsible for the creation and implementation of all facility safety and health programs. The primary manufacturing activities performed at the foundry included: molten aluminum molding; screw machining; light assembly; acid passivation; and materials handling.

After relocating to the Washington D.C. area, Ms. Corbitt was employed as a Health Compliance Officer for the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry's, OSHA division. As the sole health compliance officer, she was responsible for all health-related inspections in a seventeen county region in Northern Virginia. As a result, she gained experience with a broad variety of workplace settings ranging from heavy manufacturing to healthcare facilities. Some industries inspected include: food processing plants, polyurethane molding operations, sheet metal shops, automotive parts manufacture, as well as municipal water treatment facilities, schools, police stations and various healthcare operations. Her expertise was used in a fatal accident involving explosive gases.

Ms. Corbitt's experience as a facility safety professional and a Health Compliance Officer affords her a unique perspective when assisting our clients. Stefanie understands the requirements of a production operation as well as the need to integrate workplace safety and health regulations. To that end, she has the ability to perform a 'Mock' OSHA Inspection and training session to assist in compliance readiness, in addition, she has the ability to review required written programs for completeness. Lastly, Ms. Corbitt is capable of providing training to facility management as well as operations employees.

Barbara A. McCabe

Barbara McCabe has an MS degree in Audiology and an MS degree in Industrial Hygiene, both from West Virginia University. She has 10 years of experience in Industrial Hygiene with 7 years of experience in Program Management. She is the Program Operations Manager of the IETTC in Beckley, West Virginia. Ms. McCabe manages programs and personnel for course content and development, training material development, the conduct of training classes. She oversees and provides follow-up support to Instructors nationwide that conduct local training classes. Previously, Ms. McCabe managed the Human Factors Assessment of Environmental Technologies and the Hispanic Outreach Program. Ms. McCabe also manages and performs administrative functions associated with grant applications, proposal submittals, budget, program reports, etc. Ms. McCabe is currently serving a 2-year appointment on the OSHA National Advisory Board for Ergonomics (NACE), is a member of the West Virginia University Safety and Health Extension Advisory Board, and is a stakeholder representative for the trinational coalition (United States, Mexico, and Canada) for worker safety and health.
