Workplace Ergonomics

Ergonomics has been a widely discussed topic among safety professionals for numerous years. In some workplaces employees struggle daily with pain and discomfort caused by the lack of a proper fit between the worker and the task they need to perform. Because cumulative trauma injuries are typically difficult to treat and require lengthy recuperative periods, developing and implementing an effective ergonomics program represent an opportunity for organizations to improve worker safety, reduce injuries, and significantly reduce costs.

This presentation will focus on developing proactive ergonomic programs that discover problem areas and tasks before the symptoms even begin, allowing the task to be re-designed before injuries occur. While the bulk of the presentation will focus on industrial and construction related injuries, the office environment is also an area where organizations can apply the same principles to reduce cumulative trauma injures in an effective manner.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the basic concepts of ergonomics with regard to the worker-task equation and the four main risk factors for ergonomic injuries.
  • Recognize basic evaluative and identification tools that can be used in the workplace to identify those tasks and jobs that place workers at a greater risk for injury.
  • Develop basic engineering and administrative tactics that can help reduce the injury potential for those tasks have been identified as having the potential to cause cumulative trauma injuries.
